School’s out and we’re gearing up for summer with our next big show, HARSH, featuring works by Israel Sanchez and Mister Gonzalez. Join us this Saturday, May 5th from 5-9pm at Gaskill Gallery to celebrate the opening of what will be our one of our most progressive and explosive shows. And now some words from the artists:The body of work encompasses different lifestyles, emotions and energies that we encounter everyday. Given these experiences, we try to make sense of our twisted minds through paint on canvas. We come together as chaos and playful themes with liquid fluidity. Some of the work is very strong and bold, while others are soft and friendly. This makes for great contrast, which keeps the audience wondering what the next piece will bring. Hopefully it will bring you closer to the twisted minds that control our paintbrushes to produce what you came to see: Harsh reality.HARSH will be on view from May5th - May 30th, so if you can’t make the opening, please drop by for a visit. And as always, keep it fresh by following us on Facebook, and Twitter :)

MISSION ON MINNA
Pablo A. Medina, Nolan Jones and Chris McLean will be exhibiting recent work inspired by themes and aesthetics in and around the Mission district. This will be a one night only show on Wednesday, May 9th from 6-10 pm. Art, food, drinks and Brazilian beats will be in the house.

 Pablo A. Medina-
As a visiting artist at CCA, Pablo A. Medina has been documenting the many colorful hand painted signs in and around the Mission District. These signs have been the primary aesthetic influence for a project that he’s developed called “Ruminations,” which are a series of small paintings that use chosen Mission signage as templates for composition, color and lettering styles. As content for the paintings, Pablo pulls from his daily journals, exposing his sometimes painful and other times whimsical emotional processes to the viewer.

Nolan Jones
Nolan Jones is a graphic designer that uses hand-drawn typography to evoke thought provoking dialogue. In the series of works for the exhibit “Mission on Minna,” he explores the themes of gentrification and immigration. He utilizes typography to give a voice to the different ethnicities that have called the Mission District their home, as well as the idea of leaving one’s homeland in search of more opportunity.

Chris McLean
UBC = Uppity Bike Commuters. The inspiration for the UBC was an incident a few years ago when a friend was purposely run off the road by a Fed EX truck. The UBC engages the issues of public space when using bicycling as primary form of transportation.

The integration of art and science has had both a mutual and controversial relationship for Millennia. The works in this show “Reflections in Art and Science” were created in the CCA interdisciplinary studio course “From Bioethics to Going Green: Integrating Art and Science”.  They explore the cross-pollination of art and science in varied media and disciplines in a diverse multi-cultural environment. Hooray! I’ve made it to my Senior Show! Everyone come to my reception at North Gallery (of College Avenue Galleries) in Oakland on Wednesday, April 18th from 5:30-7:30pm to look at photos, read books, and check out my handiwork! I won’t divulge too much, but I’m pretty sure it’ll make you tingle inside :) And if you can’t make it, this is just to confirm that I have actually made it to the end of college (YAY!)
